The Rockies hoped Jimenez had somewhat turned a corner when he lasted seven and eight innings on May 17 and May 22, respectively, having allowed a combined five runs. However, a six-run, 12-hit effort his last time out no doubt leaves manager Jim Tracy waiting for his Opening Day starter to regain his footing.
One idea Tracy is comfortable with is keeping Todd Helton in the fifth spot in the order. Tracy slotted Helton in the three-hole while Carlos Gonzalez struggled, but the Rockies' skipper feels his veteran first baseman, who is hitting .307 with six homers and 22 RBIs this season, is best hitting behind cleanup man Troy Tulowitzki.
"Todd Helton is in a better place than he was in 2009, when he had a terrific season for us, and he's in a terrific place in our lineup," Tracy said. "Rather than disrupt Todd Helton to try to cure a different ill, you can create a problem by switching him.
"If you can get those other two guys going, you have a dynamic situation at three, four and five. But if you start messing with that, and that significant piece starts to go the other way, then you sit behind that desk chair in your office and feel like you've done yourself a disservice by trying to fix one thing with something else and end up creating three different scenarios that you don't want to deal with."
The Dodgers, who are seeking their first four-game winning streak and sweep of the season, will counter with Jon Garland, who bounced back nicely his last time out after surrendering seven earned runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings on May 21 against the White Sox. Garland responded to his rockiest outing of the year by limiting the Marlins to one run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Garland has not earned a victory since April 20.
Supporting Garland will be an offense looking to continue its hot hitting. The Dodgers have scored 23 runs during their three-game winning streak, having outscored Colorado, 15-3, in the first two games of this series. Rookie outfielder Jerry Sands says the approach should be simple.
"We just need to do what we've been doing," Sands said. "Keep having good at-bats, being consistent up there. A lot of times it's just luck though.
